Detailed product description

Application

A magnetic head pulley (or head roller magnet) is usually built into the drive roller (end roller) in a conveyor belt system and is therefore a very price effective magnetic metal separator. They carry off the metal particles fully automatically and continuously. Head pulley magnets separate ferromagnetic (Fe) particles – such as iron or steel, or even weakly magnetic particles such as residue from machined stainless steel – from coarse to extremely fine fractions with a small layer thickness. The material must be conveyed over the roller in a thin layer (preferably a single layer).
Magnetic pulleys require practically no maintenance, and because these magnets are integrated in an existing installation there are almost no extra operating and energy costs.
For larger layer thickness a head pulley magnet can be combined with a hanging or overbelt magnet. In this configuration the hanging magnet draws the pieces of steel out of the upper layer and the head pulley draws them from the lower layers of the bulk flow.

Magnetic pulley/headroller for sub layer of product stream

Magnetic head pulleys are particularly well suited for separation of difficult shapes such as ball bearings or batteries. They can be used for:

  • recycling (recovery) of ferrous metals;
  • removal (extraction/elimination) of ferrous metals or alloys from product flows;
  • protection of machines (prevention of damage caused by metal particles).

Design

Magnetic head pulleys are made in standard sizes and therefore easy to integrate in an existing installation. The shaft diameter, for example, is suitable for SNL bearing blocks, and the axle journal (including keyway) is suitable for a standard SEW gear unit. These are global standards and therefore cover most applications. The modular design makes it easy to replace the shaft, which is ideal for maintenance and customer-specific solutions.

Various versions available to meet your needs:

  • for belt width: 400-2000 mm;
  • diameters: 150-400 mm;
  • magnetic system: both axial and radial magnet construction possible.

Placement

There are a number of points that must be kept in mind when integrating a magnetic head pulley:

  • There may not be any steel components in the vicinity of the magnetic pulley; the belt scraper and/or separation partition must also be made of non-magnetic material. Otherwise these parts will be magnetized (which has a negative impact on the separation).
  • The optimal placement/position of the separation partition depends on the application. Goudsmit has plenty of experience with this and will be happy to provide recommendations.

Types

The 1800 gauss ferrite magnetic head pulleys have an axial magnet construction and are suitable for the separation of metal particles as small as 1 mm in the recycling, transshipment and ceramics industries.

  • not suitable for separation of weakly magnetic metal particles;
  • cost effective;
  • separation of Fe particles from 1-100 mm;
  • shell 2 mm thick;
  • magnetic field depth 100 mm;
  • axial magnet construction;

      The 6000 gauss neodymium magnetic head pulley has an axial magnet construction and, with its high magnetic strength, is suitable for separation of paramagnetic and weakly magnetic particles. Stainless steel that has been processed by a shredder or iron dust in the micron range from ceramic materials have these slightly magnetic properties, for example, and can therefore be separated in this manner.
      This high intensity separator is also used for the removal of very fine ferromagnetic metal particles from ceramic powders or glass fractions.

        The 9000 gauss neodymium magnetic head pulley, with its radial magnet construction, has an ultrahigh ('high gradient') magnetic force, making it suitable for separation of very fine weakly magnetic and paramagnetic particles. The 9000 gauss unit is used for smaller layer thicknesses than the 6000 gauss magnetic pulley.
        In principle, this high-intensity separator is not used for the removal of ferromagnetic (Fe) particles; these may only be present in the product flow on a very sporadic basis.
        Weakly magnetic particles: e.g. stainless steel that has been processed by a shredder.
        Paramagnetic particles: e.g. certain soil contaminants, such as insect excrement, soil or pebbles.

          Working principle

          A magnetic head pulley is a drive or return roller that is filled with magnets. This roller forms a magnetic system with a correspondingly rotating magnetic field that is active around the entire circumference. Ferromagnetic metal particles in a product flow are drawn by the magnetic field, and the conveyor belt that runs over the roller carries the attracted particles with it to the underside of the roller. Here they are no longer in range of the magnetic field and fall off the belt. There they can be collected and/or carried away.
          For strongly magnetic particles, carriers can be placed on the belt to ‘push’ the particles out of the magnetic field. A scraper is often used for damp or fine metal particles to prevent them from sticking to the belt.

          The advantage of a magnetic head pulley is that it is a continuous system in which it is not necessary to stop the product flow to carry off the separated pieces of metal. This makes the magnetic pulley very suitable for product flows containing large quantities of Fe contamination. Because the product passes very close to the magnet it is also a very powerful and effective separator.
