Cascade magnets filter ferromagnetic (Fe) metal contaminants – such as iron and steel – out of granulates, fibres and coarser materials in high capacity free-fall chutes. They are very robust and are used in the bulk, animal feed, plastics, ceramics and recycling industries.
A cascade magnet can handle high capacities because the plate magnets are located along the outside, against the product chute, allowing the product to fall freely between them.


Goudsmit pneumatic cleaning cascade magnets are built to be very robust, with three cascade stages as standard. Every stage has a flat magnet against the enclosure. These flat magnets generate a powerful, deep magnetic field that extracts the iron particles from the product flow and retains them until they are cleaned. The last magnet is normally made of Neoflux® (neodymium) to obtain an even better separation yield.

While the product is flowing the magnets are clamped against the housing by pneumatic cylinders. When air pressure is lost, the magnets remain securely clamped to the housing – so they continue to function.


The procedure for cleaning the filtered iron particles from the magnets is as follows:

  • stop the product flow;
  • send the signal to the controller to start a cleaning cycle;
    After a start signal is sent the process is performed completely automatically, via a pneumatic sequence circuit:
    • magnets move away from the housing – the iron falls off and is carried away via the Fe discharge chute;
    • magnets are pulled back against the housing;
    • Fe discharge valve returns to the production position;
  • restart the product flow.
