The robust permanent drum magnets are suitable for processing large volumes. They are used for processing bulk product flows containing lots of large or sharp pieces, such as scrap, glass or rubble. In these cases an overbelt or hanging magnet is unsuitable due to the high rate of belt wear.
The diameter of the drum magnet is important if the product flow contains large (>100 mm) pieces of ferrous metals. To achieve optimal separation lots of contact surface and space is required between the carriers.
The permanent drum magnets are suitable for use by metal processors, such as scrap-vehicle and first-world waste shredders, for removing the iron directly from the shredded product in a one- or two-step process. They are also often used as pre-separator, at the beginning of the processing line. Here the largest pieces of iron are separated from the main flow so they do not cause problems or damage during the processing steps that follow.
Examples: shredder streams, household refuse, WEEE scrap, incineration/steel production slags, minerals, wood processing.

Goudsmit also delivers electromagnetic drum magnets in this robust design. The major differences:

  • The magnetic field of a permanent magnet is always active, so there are no energy costs for control of the magnet.
  • For diameters of up to around 1000 mm permanent magnets are less expensive than the electromagnetic versions.


Permanent drum magnets for scrap must be strong and robust, because they are subjected to extreme conditions (large volumes of coarse, sharp pieces of iron). Therefore the shell is made of a wear-resistant material. The optimization and saturation of the steel relative to the magnets have been fully maximized, resulting in a very powerful and efficient magnetic field.
These drum magnets are available with diameters of up to 800 mm, an effective working width of up to 2000 mm and a magnetic system with neodymium and ferrite magnets.
