What are specific properties of AlNiCo Magnets?

AlNiCo is a highly heat resistant magnetic alloy. For example, these magnets are used in: ABS braking systems in cars, reed contacts, sensors, guitar parts, medical devices, alternators.

AlNiCo is an alloy; the following metals are added to iron:

  • aluminium (Al)
  • nickel (Ni)
  • cobalt (Co)

The material also contains copper and sometimes titanium.

  • low coercivity
  • high residual induction value; in certain forms, these cause very powerful magnetic fields
  • maximum operating temperature of up to 450 °C
  • complex shapes are possible through casting, but large casting cavities influence the magnetic field
  • casting pores
  • contains the relatively expensive raw materials nickel and cobalt

What you need to know about AlNiCo manufacturing and processing.

Casting, pressing and sintering are production methods for AlNiCo magnets.

Casting AlNiCo magnets involves low moulding costs due to the application of sand moulds. Post-processing is not, or hardly, required. However, casting pores lead to a less attractive whole. And large casting cavities can affect the magnetic field.

 

Pressing and sintering ensure magnets with better mechanical properties versus lower magnetic performance.

 

To avoid demagnetization, the correct length/diameter ratio is important.

 

AlNiCo has excellent resistance to corrosion, so surface treatments are not required. However, if your application requires a coating for hygienic or cosmetic reasons, these magnets are easy to coat.

 

AlNiCo magnets are fragile and can only be processed with special machining techniques. With grinding, cutting and EDM techniques we produce magnets with precise tolerances.
