With the recently purchased software for magnetic calculations, Martijn Leskens, R&D engineer at Goudsmit Magnetics, uses the finite elements or FEM method to show how a product behaves in a magnetic system and quantify the magnetic performance. Martijn: ‘We can efficiently optimize this product performance with magnetic calculations. This allows us to accurately predict how a magnet will behave in terms of depth of the magnetic field, which is

Food industry: why do you have to measure magnets?

We received a request from a French company that makes nougat. (The wonderful Nougat de Montélimar!) They wanted to have the magnets in their production facility measured in order to – in their own words – satisfy the quality standards and ensure that the magnets are still working optimally. This is also necessary in order to continue to meet the HACCP (Hygienic Critical Control Points) quality assurance standards.

Demagnetization on location: welding oil pipeline not possible

An oil pipeline that runs from Rotterdam to Venlo in the Netherlands and then splits to continue on to two locations in Germany required partial replacement; this was the finding of an inspection at the distribution station in Venlo. After cutting through the old pipe the workers found undesirable residual magnetism. This makes welding impossible. The result was panic due to time constraints.

Our demagnetization expert Roy van der Heijden received a phone call from a man asking whether Goudsmit might be able to help remove undesirable magnetism from a floating pontoon in Poland. A pontoon is a floating platform or flat-bottomed barge that supports something; in this case, a crane that had to lift concrete blocks weighing 1.3 million kilograms.
