Permanent overband magnet performs as electromagnet

We have recently developed a permanent overband magnet with a strong, deeply penetrating magnetic field. The magnet attracts a standardised steel bar (VDE 0580) of Ø20x120 mm at a distance of 550 mm; something that was previously only possible with an electro overband magnet.

Advantages
This new design offers significant advantages over electromagnets. The newly developed permanent overband magnet has the same or even better performance as a 10 kW electro overband magnet and costs significantly less to purchase and in continuous energy costs. The design has also been improved. The magnet has a better and more sealed shielding of blasted stainless steel. This makes the permanent overband magnet safer and low-maintenance. Overband magnets are intended for installation above conveyor belts in the bulk transshipment or recycling industries. They remove large quantities of ferrous parts from raw materials and dispose of them automatically and continuously. See how it works in this video.
 

Electro overband magnets
Electro overband magnets are known to have a stronger and deeper holding field than permanent overband magnets. But there are also disadvantages. An electromagnet heats up when it is switched on.

The warmer the magnet gets, the more the magnetic force decreases. When the magnet cools down, the performance improves again. An external magnet cooling is one solution, but this means an extra investment in purchasing and higher energy consumption. That the magnet heats up can also be an adverse risk in flammable or explosion-sensitive environments. That is why electromagnets cannot be awarded the ATEX 21 certificate.

Energy costs
Electro overband magnets also require a control box and bring with them the associated energy costs. A good electromagnet can easily have a power rating of 7 kW. This means continuous energy consumption costs. A permanent overbelt magnet does not require energy for the magnet and only has a motor that needs to be controlled. So no control box is needed and energy costs remain low.

In short, a permanent magnet does not have all these disadvantages and, with the advent of the new type, performs at the same level or even better.
